What is Freemasonry?

Freemasonry is a worldwide society that has brought together millions of people in a fraternal manner, of all nations, religions, political beliefs, and all social backgrounds.

It comprises an estimated 6 million members worldwide with over 6,500 in Victoria. Modern Freemasonry traces its origins to before the 17th century and proudly preserves the traditions it has inherited from those times. These traditions make Freemasonry unique within the community.

The two Lodges of Wangaratta

In Freemasonry, a lodge doesn’t refer to the usual notion of a physical building but instead to a group of men who meet as an organised group.

Wangaratta is the home of two such Lodges.  The Wangaratta Lodge of St John and the Sir Dallas Brooks Daylight Lodge.  These Lodges meet on different dates and times at The Wangaratta Masonic Centre.

The lodge of St John has a rich history dating back to 1872 and has had many historically noted member within it ranks. On its honour board you may notice many surnames that also feature as street names in our rural city of Wangaratta and it’s surrounds.

The Sir Dallas Brooks Daylight Lodge (SDBDL) is a newer lodge formed in 1985,

The term daylight lodge denotes that this lodge is a group of Freemasons who meet during the day. The Lodge was formed for members who worked at night or preferred to meet during these daylight hours.

Our Mission

A Freemason strives to improve himself, his community, and the world around him.

Through symbolism and allegory, Freemasonry imparts timeless wisdom that transcends religious, ethnic, and cultural boundaries. As the world’s oldest and largest fraternity, its mission is to foster personal freedom and the well-being of humanity. Its members hold that brotherly love, relief and truth are essential for building a better society.

Masonic labor is purely a labor of love. He who seeks to draw Masonic wages in gold and silver will be disappointed. The wages of a Mason are in the dealings with one another; sympathy begets sympathy, kindness begets kindness, helpfulness begets helpfulness, and these are the wages of a Mason.

-Benjamin Franklin

Self-Improvement

Freemasonry offers a structured path for personal growth and self-improvement. By studying its symbolism and teachings, members work towards becoming better versions of themselves.

Charity

Freemason organizations run charitable initiatives and foundations focused on supporting those in need. Members are frequently engaged in community service and giving back to their communities.

Brotherhood

Freemasonry nurtures camaraderie and brotherhood among its members. The lodges provide a space where people from all walks of life can unite in a spirit of friendship and mutual respect.
