About The Wangaratta lodge of St. John
Members of The Wangaratta Lodge of St. John are woven into its proud 150+ year history.
Within our welcoming and supportive environment, we foster lifelong friendships and share knowledge across generations. Our members come from diverse professions and backgrounds — united in fellowship, growth, and mutual respect.

Social
We’re a friendly and social Lodge, with plenty of opportunities to spend time together—both in and outside our regular meetings.
Beyond the Lodge room, we gather once each month for morning coffee and after-work drinks. If you’re interested in meeting our members or would like to learn more about Freemasonry, these relaxed socials are a great chance to do so. Get in touch with our secretary Roger: StJohn66@freemasonswangaratta.net.au
Our members are also frequent visitors to other Lodges in the district. Carpooling for these visits makes it easy to enjoy a night out with familiar faces, even when we’re away from our own Lodge meetings.
We encourage members to attend monthly rehearsals, which are often followed by a casual social hour over a drink or two.
None of these activities are compulsory—but they’re enjoyable chances to connect, share stories, and build lasting friendships within the Lodge.
Charitiy
The Wangaratta Lodge of St. John is proud to support charitable causes that benefit the people of Wangaratta and surrounding areas. We also encourage and assist our members in their own personal charitable efforts, wherever possible.
Over recent years, our Lodge has contributed meaningfully to a range of organisations, including:
– Northeast Health Wangaratta
– The Bob Iskov RSL Kokoda Scholarship
– Wangaratta Family History Society
– The Variety Bash
– MCM’s Sleep at the ’G
Along many other worthwhile causes.

April 1888
Wor Bro Brash produced a Dispensation from the Grand Master, granting the Lodge of St. John No. 1455 permission to hold their meetings in St. Georges Hall. This Hall was in Murphy St next to the Council Club Hotel (now The Grand Central)

1889
At the meeting held on February 27th 1889 and adjourned to March 6th, it was decided by unanimous vote to change from No. 1455 English Constitution to No. 66 Victoria Constitution.
And on 13th of March the following resolution was carried “that this Lodge transfers its allegiance from the Grand Lodge of England to the United Grand Lodge of Victoria.
It was at this time that Bro. John Bowser joined the Lodge.
John Bowser then later represented Wangaratta and Ovens in the Victorian Parliament, then becoming 26th Premier of Victoria.
In 1927 he was Knighted.
For quite a number of years there appeared very little of any interest in the minutes, candidates came forward regularly, and during this period the Lodge progressed both numerically and financially.

1902 -1903
In 1902 a committee was appointed to look for a site suitable for a Temple.
After inspecting several sites the present position in Ovens St. was decided upon, tenders were called and the tender of £647.18.0 was accepted, the Foundation Stone was laid on March 27th 1903 by Wor. Bro. A. L. M. Steele, he was then presented with the Silver Trowel that was used for the ceremony, the Temple was dedicated by Rt Wor Bro Dr Balls Headley D.G.M. on August 7th 1903 the Lodge was also Consecrated at the same time.
After the Temple was dedicated, the Lodge settled down to a quiet time up to and during the war years, during which period the Lodge supported patriotic appeals with quite large sums of money.
The average attendance for many years, including the war years was 25 members and numerous visitors.
1933
In 1933 interchange of visits between King Solomon Lodge No.29 and St. John commenced.
In 1939 King Solomon Brethren conducted the Installation and presented a clock to the Lodge, it still has pride of place in the Lodge Room.
These visits started on an annual basis, but later became bi-annual, many strong and lasting friendships have resulted from these visits, as it typifies and strengthens the spirit of Brotherly-love, so important a principle of our order.

1953
A committee was appointed to submit plans for a new Temple, in January 1953 a motion was carried accepting plans for building extensions.
The foundations for the building and much of the other preliminary work was carried out by voluntary labour of the members.
1972
The Wangaratta Lodge of St. John No. 66, celebrated it’s centenary and reconsecration.
In May of 1972 the Secretary received a visit from Wor. Bro. A. L. M. Steele, a Grandson of Wor. Bro. A. L. M. Steele who laid the Foundation Stone in 1903, saying he would like to present to the Lodge the Silver Trowel which was used on that occasion, his gift is very much appreciated by the Lodge.

1978
Tom Cameron led a team of representatives from the Lodges who met at the Ovens Street property to form a Board of Management to share the running of the Masonic Centre.
A Deed of Arrangement was drawn up and the Wangaratta Masonic Centre Board of Management was formed on the 1st July 1978. The Board was made up of three representatives each from the three Craft Lodges and later a single representative from the Mark and Chapter Lodges.
The Board is still functioning today.

2010
As the building at Ovens Street was becoming harder to maintain, the Uniting Church property on the corner of Appin Street and Esmond Street was offered for sale.
This property was one that had been considered a likely option to re-locate to.
Assistance was sought from UGLV to purchase the property and after alterations and renovations the Wangaratta Lodges re-located to the current premises.

2022
On Saturday 3 December The Wangaratta Lodge of St. John No. 66, celebrated it’s 150 anniversary with The Grand Master Elect RWBro. Anthony John Bucca Re-Consecrating the Lodge.
Tim McCurdy MLA, Dean Rees Mayor and retired Lt. General Ash Power AO CSC in Were in attendance.
A highlight was the presentation to the lodge by the Mayor of Wangaratta the original foundation stone of the former temple.
