The formation of the Sir Dallas Brooks Daylight Lodge

In the carly months of 1984 several brethren felt that there was the need for a daylight Lodge in the Wangaratta area. A number of brethren were contacted and informal meetings were held on a number of occasions.

At a meeting in July, Rt. Wor. Bros. John Humphris and Garnet Jackson, accompanied by V.Wor. Bro. Ron Chamberlain (Assistant Grand Secretary) enjoyed lunch with 18 of our foundation members and at the conclusion of which a very fruitful discussion took place and as a result of which, the future of the Lodge was certain.

The Committee was satisfied that the financial viability of the Lodge was assured and that the Consceration could take place in November of that year by the Most Worshipful Grand Master, M. Wor. Bro. Mr Justice Asche.

Accordingly, at a meeting on Tuesday 20’ August 1984, it was moved by Bro Tom Hodson and seconded by Bro. Arthur Davies that a Daylight Lodge be formed. This was carried unanimously and 43 petitioners signed the form to enable the new daylight lodgo to bo formed in Wangaratta.

Wor. Bro. Jim Campbell P.S.G.D agreed to take the Office of Foundation Worshipful Master and V. Wor. Bro. Major A. L. Webber P.G.I.Wkgs consented to become the Foundation Secretary.

On Thursday 18th of September 1984, Wor: Bro. Jim Campbell suggested that the Lodge be called he Sir Dallas Brooks Daylight Lodge as Sir Dallas and Lady Brooks had attended the Declaration and Proclamation of the City of Wangaratta, also the program for the Vice Regal

Party had included a visit to the Wangaratta Masonic Hall as Sir Dallas was a Past Grand Master of the Order.

This was formalised by a motion by Bro. Tom Hodson, Seconded by Wor. Bro. Ric. Burridge P.S.G.D. and carried unanimously.

An approach was made by V. Wor. Bro. Major A. L Webber P.G.L.Wkgs to Lady Brooks for her approval to use the his name and permission was granted by her and a picture of Sir Dallas was graciously given to the Lodge by her: Permission was also sought and granted from the Commandant General of the Royal Marines Poole, Dorset, UK, which was Sir Dallas Brooks Unit, to enable the Lodge to incorporate the Crest of the Royal Marios Lodge Crest, Banner and Presentation Jewel.

The new Lodge was sponsored by The Wangaratta Lodge of St. John. No.66.

The Consecration and Installation was performed by The most Worshipful Grand Master, Most Worshipful Brother The Honourable Mr. Justice Austin Asche on Saturday the 2nd of November 1985 followed by a barbecue on the next day which has become a tradition following every Installation.

How to Become a Freemason

Many men spend their lives thinking that Freemasonry is an exclusive, invitation-only club.

In reality, you only need to ask a Mason to join. A key aspect of being a “Free” Mason is that you must come of your own free will, without any outside pressure, you will also need to meet the requirements listed below.

The requirements to join Freemasonry in Victoria are: Being a man at least 18 years of age, a belief in a Supreme Being (a god or a concept of something greater than yourself, there is no requirement to be an active practitioner of any particular religion) and have a good moral character.
