What is Freemasonry?
WHAT WE ARE
We are a distinctive members’ organisation with a proud heritage spanning over 300 years. Free from political and religious affiliations, our community brings together individuals of all ages, backgrounds, cultures, and beliefs. We gather in groups called Lodges to take part in meaningful ceremonial traditions that inspire mutual respect, tolerance, and a commitment to civic and charitable duties, all while enjoying ourselves and forming lifelong friendships.
WHAT WE AIM FOR
To welcome individuals from all backgrounds and walks of life, empowering them to grow into thoughtful, confident members of society. To inspire and motivate them to live out our core values of True Friendship, Compassion, and Honesty both personally and publicly. To strengthen our standing as a positive force within communities and society at large, and as a vibrant organisation that others are proud to be part of.

Why become a Freemason?
People are drawn to Freemasonry for many reasons. For some, it’s the promise of genuine friendship, bonds that grow over time and stand strong through life’s many milestones.
Within our Lodges, you’ll meet people who are different from you, individuals of all ages, backgrounds, and interests, connected by shared values and experiences found through Freemasonry.
For centuries, our members have come from every walk of life, from chief executives and business leaders to tradespeople and community workers, united not by status, but by a shared commitment to personal growth and mutual respect.
Many are also inspired by our ceremonial traditions, meaningful and centuries-old teachings focused on self-reflection and the pursuit of a better self.
At the core of Freemasonry lies compassion. Members are encouraged to support others, with charitable giving and community service forming a vital part of Masonic life. We also take time to cultivate fellowship, whether it’s sharing a meal, raising a glass, or simply enjoying one another’s company, we celebrate the friendships that grow along the way.

frequently asked questions
What goes on in a Lodge Meeting?
Masonic meetings feature three distinct ‘degree ceremonies’, each symbolising a different stage of life. These ceremonies, presented much like one-act plays, are designed to impart moral lessons and guide members in their personal development.
The first stage is that of the ‘Entered Apprentice’ or initiate. Here, Freemasons are taught that all individuals are born equal, and that while some may prosper more than others, it is a duty to support and uplift those in need. This principle underpins our enduring commitment to Service.
The journey continues with the ‘Fellow Craft’ degree, which emphasises the importance of continuous self-improvement and personal growth.
Finally, one advances to the level of ‘Master Mason’, where the focus turns to the finite nature of life and the profound importance of using one’s time wisely and purposefully.
While the general content of these ceremonies is readily available online, their true meaning is best understood through direct experience.
How much does it cost to become a Freemason?
There is a one-off Freemasons Victoria Joining Fee of $250 and you will receive a personalised new member pack upon joining. The cost of annual membership varies from Lodge to Lodge, but this is usually between $300 to $500 per year.
Is Freemasonry International?
Freemasonry has an enduring presence in countries around the world, with over six million members worldwide. Freemasons are welcome to visit Lodges in other countries, where they are often greeted with warmth and hospitality by fellow members who are well acquainted with the local culture and customs.
